1. Amen! (D'Angelo's Back)

“Black stardom is rough, dude,” Chris Rock tells me when I reach him to talk about D. “I always say Tom Hanks is an amazing actor and Denzel Washington is a god to his people. If you’re a black ballerina, you represent the race, and you have responsibilities that go beyond your art. How dare you just be excellent?”

Very, very good read. Click the post title for the full interview in this month’s issue of GQ.

Since the days of jamming to her self-titled debut album and Never Say Never on crowded trains via Walkman (yes, with a cassette tape, lol), I’ve been a huge fan of Brandy’s. Her latest single - a catchy little tune - features a rapping Chris Brown and showcases those angelic vocals of hers. I think it’s a great follow up to the first single - a girl power duet ballad with Monica (great strategy) - It All Belongs To Me.

I’m excited for the comeback album, Two Eleven, set for release next month (June 2012) especially since she’s rumored to have collaborated with two of my favorite young songwriters in the game right now (Frank Ocean and Drake).

Any other B-Rocka fans out there? How do you guys feel about the second single?

    I absolutely adore this song.

    “When there’s no one
    but inside the coldest part
    shadows cast in afternoon
    I would forget
all the love I knew before
    but now I’m sure
    there’s no more room”

    - No More Room, Emily King (The Seven EP)

If you’ve ever experienced love or heartbreak in any capacity, you’ll understand exactly why I think this EP is easily one of the best of the year. I’ve listened to it endlessly since its release last month and every single song is magic. Some, powerful enough to draw tears (No More Room, in particular).

I sincerely appreciate when I can tell (and FEEL) that an artist has lived every word that he/she sings. Hands down, this EP’s the best purchase I’ve made this summer.

I done went thru just about two bags of tissues, baby
And you’re lookin’ at me like you ain’t the issue, baby
And though I tried to leave, I can’t stop missin’ you, baby
And I keep comin’, I keep comin’ baaaack…

Jazmine Sullivan - Holding You Down (Goin’ in Circles)

This is my JAM right now (and her new single). For the past couple weeks, I’ve thrown this on repeat and completely zoned out. It takes me back to the place she’s singing of EVERY time and makes even more grateful that I’m not there anymore.

In opinion, that’s exactly what good R&B is supposed to do, evoke an emotion.

What do you guys think (of the song and/or the purpose of R&B)?
